Warm up – Cat and Mouse

Description:

Choose two of the children to be cats, everyone else is a mouse and wears a tail (coloured band) in the back of their shorts / trousers.

The mice run around and the cats try to catch them by pulling the tails out. Make sure tails are showing before starting and ask the cats to collect as many tails as they can within the time. Yell the cats to keep hold of them, so that no one slips on them.

Give the cats 1-2mins to complete the task

Congratulate the surviving mice and count the tails. The cat with the most tails is the winner!

Activity 1 – Solo Throwing and Catching

  • Revisit learning and learnt skills from previous lesson.
  • Children to work alone, with one piece of equipment each (Tennis Ball, Bean Bag, Football, Basketball, Dodgeball)
  • Children to have their own space allocated in the area, place a floor marker or cone on the floor for each pupil
  • Give children the option to pick their own equipment, if they want to challenge themselves select a smaller ball if they want to make it easier use a larger piece of equipment.
  • Once the child has equipment and is in their own space, they need to develop a good stance.
  • Standing with feet shoulder width apart with toes pointing forward to have good balance.
  • The child will then attempt to throw the equipment in the air just slightly above their head and catch the ball.
  • Every catch is one point, if they drop the ball their last score was their highest score.
  • Allocate 3 minutes for this activity.
  • Repeat and allow children to swap equipment if they would like to challenge of make it easier for
    themselves.

Activity 2 – Treasure Catch

  • Split the group into 4 or 6 teams depending on the size of the learning area. Place the 4 or 6 hoops around the outside of the area and line the teams up behind their own hoop. This is their treasure chest. Teacher/coach to place a 20/30 items (Tennis balls, dodgeballs, bean bags) in
the middle of the learning area.
  • Each group will have a second hoop in front of the first 2/3 meters away.
  • One child at a time from each group will run out to the middle and collect one item of treasure, they will then turn, run and stand in their second hoop facing their team. The child will then throw the item to the waiting group and if the person at the front catches the item they win one point and put the treasure in their chest.
  • If they don’t catch the item it must go back in the middle of the area.
  • Play this activity for 5/10 minutes.
  • Once all the items have gone from the middle, one child at a time can run out and steal a item from another teams chest. If they catch it they keep the point, if they drop it, this must be returned to the team they stole from.
  • At the end of the allocated time, count up the items and that is the teams score.

Activity 3 – Join the Bench

  • Set up 4/6 benches depending on learn areas size and benches available.
  • Split the class into equal team, if you use 4 benches you will need to split the class into 4 teams.
  • Place down a floor marker/cone 5 meters away from the bench, this is to be used as a throwing marker. Have a floor marker 2 meters behind this for children to wait behind.
  • Select one pupil to start on the bench, they will be the first catcher.
  • Each group will need one ball (Dodgeball/Tennis Ball).
  • Children will run out and stand on the throwing marker, they will then throw the ball towards the catcher.
  • If the catcher catches the ball the thrower joins them on the bench. If they don’t catch it the thrower joins the back of their line.
  • Any child on the bench can catch the ball.
  • The first team to have all children on the bench is the winning team. Or play for a set time and the team with the must children on the bench will be the winning team.
  • Repeat several times allowing everyone in the group to be the first catcher at the start.
  • Use a bigger ball and shorter distance to make it easier
  • Use a smaller ball and longer distance to make it easier.
